Significant development potential exists in the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine sectors of the biotechnology sector. Excellent example is provided by the intensively promoted innovation centers in Dresden and Leipzig, from which a strong biomedicine community has arisen – providing outstanding access to a highly trained workforce and promoting further economic growth.

The new federal states - and Saxony-Anhalt in particular - also enjoy excellent scientific standing in the area of green biotechnology usage in agriculture. One of the world’s largest gene banks for the preservation of agricultural and ornamental plants is to be found at the Leibniz-Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) in Gatersleben. Here, potential investors can find the optimal conditions for all of their biotechnology activities.

Biotechnology Clusters in Eastern Germany

The new federal states are also home to several cluster networks focusing on biotechnology. Germany's biotech industry is thriving. Revenue, jobs and funding have grown for the fourth year in a row. A major success factor is the close cooperation between biotech companies, research insitutes, technology parks and polticial players - coordinated by biotech clusters.

Cluster activities are promoted by the German federal government. Individual cluster research activities are supported by a number of funding instruments, many of which focus on partnering projects also open to international companies.
